Oxford United Ladies (0) 0
Oxford City Ladies (9) 14 (Deanne Tomkins 22, 29, Stephanie Mobbs 30, 35, 52, Rachel Catling 31, 44, 45, 58, 77, Claire Ostle 32, 61, 80, Carol Harwood 38)
(played at Oxford City)
County Cup holders Oxford City reinforced their position as the premier women’s team in Oxford with this comprehensive demolition of United.
The game started evenly at a rain-lashed Court Place Farm stadium, and United had their best chance of the match in the 11th minute. City keeper Hannah Cox, injured in making the save, had to be replaced by George Currie, but it was City who went on the attack, with the United keeper making the first of several fine saves.
City finally went one up midway through the first half, Deanne Tomkins forcing the ball home from a great cross by Heidi Hiscock, and Tomkins doubled the lead just before the half-hour with an unstoppable shot. This was the first of six goals in nine minutes as Steph Mobbs (twice), Rachel Catling and Claire Ostle netted against a shell-shocked United before Carol Harwood added a textbook header from a Tomkins corner. Catling completed a first-half hat-trick with two further strikes, and only some last-ditch defending kept the score to single figures at the break.
City kept up the pressure in the second period, with Mobbs completing her hat-trick and Catling adding two more. Ostle also notched up her hat-trick with a tap-in following great work by Katie Totton, and perhaps the game’s best goal when she combined persistence and skill to waltz past the defence.
This was an excellent performance from City, who passed the ball superbly in difficult conditions and showed great awareness and skill. Commiserations to the United players who never let their heads drop.
City team: Hannah Cox (sub George Currie 11 min) – Lauren Carnell (capt) (sub Abi Smith ht), Carol Harwood, Heidi Hiscock – Claire Ostle, Claire Bates, Michelle Robinson, Louise Craig – Rachel Catling, Deanne Tomkins, Steph Mobbs (sub Katie Totton 58 min).
